Distribution: Widespread in Washington and Oregon, chiefly east of the Cascades; east to Michigan

Habitat: Open, sunny areas, often in sandy soil, low to moderate elevations

Flowers: June-September

Description:
General:

Perennial from a taproot and somewhat woody base, with several stems 1-5 dm. tall, the herbage hairy or glandular or both.

Leaves:

Lowermost leaves early-deciduous, the others numerous and evenly distributed along the stem, up to 5 cm. long and 1 cm. wide, oblong, alternate and entire.

Flowers:

Heads several in a short, flat-topped inflorescence; involucre 5-10 mm. high, the bracts imbricate, tapering to a point; disk and ray flowers yellow, the rays 10-25, 6-10 mm. long; inner pappus of capillary bristles, outer pappus of evident scales.
